Great California ShakeOut is an annual opportunity to learn how to be safer in the event of a major earthquake. Every year we develop different ways to apply earthquake safety by changing the exercise to help us deal with different problems during an earthquake. This year will focus on our “Drop, Cover and Hold On” exercise, we will also be “Securing our space”.
On October 21, at 2 p.m. On the 30th, we will conduct our “Drop, Cover and Hold” exercise. During this time, practice falling to the ground, cover the COVER by sitting on a sturdy desk or table, and hold it until the tremors stop. The second component of this year’s exercise is to take a moment to “secure your territory.” Start by moving furniture such as bookshelves, beds, sofas, or other places where people sit, sleep, or spend a lot of time. Move heavy objects to the bottom shelves. According to a study by the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), 55% of injuries sustained during the 1994 Northridge earthquake were caused by furniture or objects falling. Only one percent of the injuries were caused by damage to the building.
