EL KAJON, California. – The man who is currently in hospital is expected to be arrested in the district jail after his apartment was set on fire near Wales Park.
At 5:13 p.m., police at 388 Shady Lane responded to a man who allegedly threatened his roommate with a baseball bat, “turned on the gas in the kitchen and threatened to burn the apartment,” according to a statement from the El Cajon police department.
Lieutenant Jeremiah Larson said officers tried several times to contact the suspect, but he refused to leave the building. At some point, flames are burning in the apartment.
Heartland Fire turned off the gas and extinguished the fire.

“The suspect refused to leave the apartment, despite the fact that it was burning,” Larson said. “After the fire was finally extinguished, the officers were able to negotiate with the man and bring him safely.”
The suspect was identified as 22-year-old Angel Jimenez. He was taken to UC San Diego Medical Center with injuries sustained in the fire. He will be sentenced to regional imprisonment on suspicion of criminal threats and arson.

The roommate of the suspect was also slightly injured.
While the fire was contained in the reporting apartment, the surrounding units were damaged by water and fire. Displaced residents were offered assistance through the Red Cross.
